Ocean City is in Cape May County, New Jersey
Ocean City has a total area of about 11 square miles with about 7 square miles of land and 4 square miles of water. It is in close proximity to Philadelphia, New York, and Baltimore. This seaside city features many amusements areas, beach and boardwalk spots, sports facilities, year-round resort events, dining, shopping and entertainment establishments, and other tourist attractions.
Ocean City as a Family Resort
According to the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce website, the city is known as “America’s Greatest Family Resort.” The Travel Channel also named the city as the “Best Family Beach of 2005.” As a popular family seaside resort, the city government has prohibited the sales of alcoholic beverages within its limits since 1879.
Ocean City showcases miles of guarded beaches, a 2.5-mile Boardwalk and a quaint downtown where many free family activities abound. It is an ideal place where reunions, group outings and beach weddings happen all year round. There are also many amusement rides and parks that become beautiful backdrops to family vacations.
Ocean City Beaches
According to the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce website, there are about 42 guarded beaches during the summer season. During off-peak season, there are a limited number of guarded beaches which usually includes: St. Charles, 9th Street,14th Street, 44th Street, Brighton Pl., 11th Street, 26th Street, 57th Street, 8th Street, 12th Street and 34th Street.
Beach Zoning and Safety
The Ocean City beaches are divided into zones from north to south. Each zone has a first aid station located at the zone headquarters. They are specifically located at the 1st Street, 12th Street, 34th Street and 59th Street. For the maintenance of the beach zones and to assure the safety of beach-goers, each visitor must pay for a beach tag. A tag can be purchased for the season, the week or the day.
There are also seasonal tags available during the pre-season, before the Memorial Day, at discounted rates. They can be purchased at the City Hall, the post office along West Avenue, the Welcome Center along Route 52 Causeway and the Information at the Music Pier along the Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace.
Surf Chair Program
Ocean City beaches provide wheelchair accessible services for the mobility of limited individuals. This program called “Surf Chairs” is based near the 6th Street of the Boardwalk, outside the Ocean City Sports and Civic Center. Reservations are suggested when availing of the service. As of June 2010, this program is available during weekdays from (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (with check-in until 4:30 p.m.) and during weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (with check-in until 5:00 p.m.)
As one of the country’s finest year-round resort islands, Ocean City beaches and bays provide ideal spots for sunbathing, boating, fishing, jet skiing and kayaking. The long Boardwalk features two amusement parks, a water park, go-carts, bike rentals, miniature golf, fine dining restaurants, and a downtown shopping district complete with tourist and specialty stores. Kayaking and surfing are popular water sports for those who want to explore Ocean City beyond the land and bay attractions. The Waverly Blvd. and 7th St. are also known surfing beaches in Ocean City.
Aside from enjoying miles of pristine white sand and ample space for making beautiful sand castles, there are many outdoor recreation sites around Ocean City. The Playland’s Castaway Cove is a park known for many brightly painted murals. Families can experience fishing adventures at the Rainbow III Deep Sea Fishing, Crystal Blue Sport Fishing, Fish Tale Charters and Tail-Hooked Sport Fishing. Travelers can also enjoy the Ocean City Parasailing acitivities.
