Do you enjoy fishing and seeing natural wildlife? If the answer to either of those questions is yes, then you should pay a visit to Choke Canyon. In this article, I will describe what Choke Canyon has to offer you.
Choke Canyon is a park that is located in south Texas, and the town of Three Rivers is its closest neighbor. In this part of the country the climate tends to be very hot in the summer and mild in the winter. There will be the occasional freeze in winter, but normally it’s not too cold. I would say that the highs in the summer average around ninety five degrees and seventy five degrees in the winter months.
What is there to do in this park? Well, if you are an avid wildlife photographer then you will definitely enjoy yourself. There is an exorbitant amount of wildlife to see, at this park. Some examples of animals that roam the park are whitetail deer, javelinas, turkey, peacocks, bobcats, an assortment of birds; etc. The animals are quite tame due to their long association with the human populace. You can buy corn to feed the deer and other animals with, if you so desire. The animals will come right up to your car, but be careful to stay in your vehicle. You don’t want to be attacked by a crazed javelina or something along those lines.
If you wish to stay at the park, you have several options. You can stay in small cabins that are located throughout the park, if you so choose. They also have areas designated for tents and RVs. The cabins themselves are quite basic and do not have a bathroom or any other similar amenities. The cabins do offer electricity inside, though. Bring along a miniature gas stove if you wish, or cook outside in a small barbecue pit. And be sure to bring some mosquito repellent; they can be quite persistent, at times. Restrooms and bathing facilities are located throughout the park, and yours should be within walking distance of your campsite. Or you can just drive, if you like. You do have to pay a small fee for visiting or camping at the park.
If you enjoy fishing, then you will not be disappointed. Bass, catfish, and other species of fish abound in this lake. The lake itself is quite large, so you will have plenty of room to navigate your boat. There is the occasional fishing tournament, so try to plan your trip around them. If you try to go fishing when there is a fishing tournament, you are going to have to deal with a lot of impatient fisherman. As for bait, the nearby stores have plenty of live bait, blood bait, cheese bait, maize; etc. You will also find basic foodstuffs at these stores, so you will not starve if you fail to catch some fish.
Choke Canyon is a great place for a family outing, picture taking, fishing, or to just get away from it all. If you decide to visit this park, you will not regret your decision.
